Ancient Ruins of Apollonia in Albania

            Apollonia was founded in the 6th Century BC and flourished during the 4th Century BC.  Although a few kilometers back from the Adriatic Sea, it was an important coastal city due to the River Aoos running along the edge of the city and out into the Adriatic Sea.The River Aoos, currently the Vjose River, was disrupted by an earthquake in 234 AD.  With its riverbed disrupted, the river diverted and began its flow to the sea almost 20 miles south of Apollonia, taking away its access to the sea.  Apollonia quickly lost its appeal and rapidly decayed, with its ruins eventually reclaimed by nature.  In the early 19th century its ruins were discovered and slowly they have been excavated over the years.  The natural beauty of this location is easily seen in this aerial panorama Apollonia and the nearby countryside.  By all means zoom in, there's much to see and lots of pixels for details.
