Haute Route 2019 - Pas de Chevres

            I celebrated my birthday in 2019 by hiking the Walkers Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt. This photo was taken on my seventh day.

This photo was taken while sitting on top of the Pas de Chevres just after climbing the ladders leading up from the Glacier de Cheilon. 

It was a gorgeous morning as I departed Cabane Dix. There was about six inches of fresh snow covering everything. The crossing of the Glacier de Cheilon was easy with only one tricky meltwater stream to deal with. 

The guidebooks all make out the 'Pas de Chevre' as the crux of the entire Haute Route. The death defying ladders leading to the pass! I admit I laughed a little when i got to the top of the ladders. There was nothing tricky or death defying or even slightly scary. I guess everyone has their own risk tolerances and fears. If you are particularly scared of heights or ladders then I can see how the ladders might give you a bit of pause. If you're curious I felt that descending the loose rock and talus of the Col de la Chaux in the snow was the crux of the route for me. 

If you've got a sharp eye you might notice the top of the Matterhorn making a guest appearance on the far right of this image.
