Marine Biologist Portrait - a photo on Flickriver

            A Florida Keys marine biologist with a grant from the state of Florida is raising sea urchins with hopes of reintroducing them on to the Keys’ struggling coral reefs.   Bleaching due to rising ocean temperatures and algae growth are the primary causes for the loss of nearly eighty percent of the coral in the Caribbean.   Sea urchins are voracious eaters of algae and when placed on coral act as “lawn mowers”. 

Jim Brittsan, 27, a Tavernier, Florida resident has devised a unique and low-cost approach to raising urchins in an Atlantic nursery he has created.   The nursery has been fashioned out of repurposed items such as ice cream buckets, crates, ceiling tiles and Gatorade bottles.   So far, his work is showing great promise.
