Punta Troia, Marettimo, Egadi Islands, Sicily, October 2015 508

            The Punta Troia Castle is one of the oldest monuments of Marettimo. Was originally a Saracen tower. Around 1140 Roger II, King of Sicily, transformed the tower in a real castle. The site over time was also a refuge for pirates and privateers. With the French Revolution, "Real Castle Marettimo" became a terrible prison, especially for political prisoners in 1793, the castle had at least 52 political prisoners, crammed into a prison created in an old cistern that "the Pit" .'s prison conditions were described in his memoirs by Guglielmo Pepe , who was imprisoned from 1802 to 1803. In 1844 King Ferdinand II, after having inspected, decided to close the prison. During the "big" war it was used as a lookout military and, for a short period, also hosted a telegraph station.

Il Castello di Punta Troia   For nearly a century has been abandoned to his fate, threatening to collapse at any moment. But the intervention of recent months, prepared by the City of Favignana thanks to a grant of ' European Union, has helped to save the ancient fortress, making it finally reborn. After years of decay and neglect the Castello di Punta Troia was finally restored and now houses a MUSEUM OF PRISONS and a OBSERVATORY of MONK SEAL of ' Marine Protected Area Egadi Islands. structure is also equipped with spaces (indoor and outdoor ) to be allocated to conference activities and events, equipped with audio-visual media technology. objective is to transform the old fortress into a cultural center in the heart of the Mediterranean, can host events and events of national and international level.
