The New Political Order: "Permanent Campaign" and "Coercive Democracy"

            Scott McClellan, former Press Secretary to George Bush, wrote a book "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception". The book is going on sale Monday, but advance copies are out already.

In the book he discusses many things. I will cite just three of them here:

1. The Bush administration engaged - from the beginning - in a practice called "The Permanent Campaign", in which the administration has focused its' efforts on making a continuous effort to market, sell and propagandize their issues instead of trying to bring people together and address issues in a honest and straightforward manner.

2.  The Iraq war was unnecessary and a mistake. The press - many of whom are his friends - did not do its' job in asking questions and vetting information leading up to the Iraq War and subsequent occupation. According to McClellan, Bush and his cronies were trying to implement "Coercive Democracy" (an oxymoron) in Iraq using tactics which include conducting a preemptive war, creating an unjustified occupation, using torture tactics, etc. to force Iraq into submission. Of course, all of these things are anti-democratic.

3.  According to McClellan, Bush told him that he (Bush) was the one who declassified the national security information leading up to the "outing" of CIA agent Valerie Plame. This is a national security breach and an impeachable offense, if true.

There is much more in the book and I am definitely getting my copy asap, so I can see for myself what he is saying. If you wish to discuss this issue, feel free to do so. I may have more to add later as well.
