Peak Redemption

            Wiley Brook Bridge. It is an icon in New England railroading. I've always loved seeing photos of Conway Scenic's Notch Train cross over the bridge, especially in the fall. To me, that felt like the quintessential New England shot. I vowed to myself if i ever had the means to visit New Hampshire in October, I would do what was necessary to get this shot.

Back in 2018, I made my first trip to the White Mountains, and chased the Notch Train with great success, at least on the NB segment. On the SB leg, I thought it would be a wise idea to grab it leaving Fabyan, then chase it to the bridge. I severely misjudged the steepness of the hill. As a consequence, about half way up, I could hear the train trundle over the bridge and fading away into the woods above. Opportunity gone. Sad day. Trip kinda ruined.

Fast forward to 2019, and this time I made it a point to arrive as early as possible. After catching the Notch Train at Crawford Notch, I headed back to the bridge and began the hike to the iconic vantage point, making it with plenty of time to spare. The 3 hour wait yielded results though, as 252 leads the Notch Train across Wiley Brook.

Shot checked off. Trip not ruined. 11/10 will come back for more one day.
