Umber Skipper (Poanes melane) butterfly on Mugwort

            Here is an Umber Skipper (Poanes melane) butterfly paused for a moment on a leaf of native Mugwort (Artemisia douglasiana, Asteraceae) by our summer-dry creek today.  I'm mostly looking for spiders this month, but I'm always ready for anything else that comes along - especially a nice late-season butterfly like this.  (San Marcos Pass, 21 October 2020)

It was a few degrees cooler again today, not quite up to 80°.   Cooler weather is approaching and probably fog and drizzle.  There's even a chance of light rain this weekend.  This will be our first precipitation since last spring.
