Beach, Estuary & Mudflats: Pier & Train. This is the pier at Southend-on-Sea, England. The body of water is the Thames Estuary. Southend Pier is a major landmark in Southend-on-Sea. Extending 1.34 miles (2.16 km) into the Thames Estuary, it is the longest pleasure pier in the world. Sir John Betjeman once said that "the Pier is Southend, Southend is the Pier". I was about one mile from the Pier when I took this shot. The land beyond is Allhallows on the Hoo peninsula in Kent where there is a holiday caravan site and is about six miles beyond the Pier.
