            1970 Humber Sceptre, photographed in 1979. Part of my "film month of May".

This car was owned by my late father and photographed by him outside a lock-up garage that he rented in Southchurch, Southend-on-Sea.  Dad had been a motor mechanic in his younger days and always looked after his own car.

The summer previous to this I had borrowed the Humber to go on holiday to Cornwall with Rosemary who later became my wife.  During a visit to Dartmoor in neighbouring Devon, I squeezed the car past another vehicle on a very narrow moorland road.  I was horrified to hear a quiet scraping sound - I had got too close to a stone wall.  Upon returning home, I washed the car and confessed to my Dad what I had done.  After a bit of humming and hawing, feeling the tiny scrape on the nearside wheel arch he said "That's OK. The scratch was there before you went. It was probably just something rubbing the underside of the car, a bush or something that you heard".  What a relief!

Dad took this photo with his Olympus Trip 35, film stock unknown.  Unusually for Dad, it is in focus!
