Bloom of the moment - a photo on Flickriver

            Our Daily Challenge: nesting

When Queen Anne's lace goes to seed, the flower umbell closes around itself as if to protect its offspring until they begin another life. I don't know the adaptive purpose of this; perhaps to delay seed dispersal until the conditions are right.

For some reason this flower head had failed to produce any seeds. The bracts embraced themselves anyway, producing this nest-like structure. It was more fantastic than any of the nearby fertile umbells, as if it had poured all its impotent creative energy into beauty. The background colours came from neighbouring goldenrod in the morning sun.
