The battle of the Yser (Ijzer, Iser) took place in October 1914 with the result that the small part of Belgium behind the river Ijzer was never occupied by the Germans.

This picture gives evidence that two English biplanes operated by the R.F.C. [Royal Flying Corps] were captured by the Germans during the battle of the Yser, according to the card text.

As often this seems not to be quite correct. The captured machines are

- A B.E.2, an early version,partly dismantled as the engine has been taken out. The serial number on the tail is probably cut out by souvenir hunters. Hence it is not possible to know exactly which B.E.2 this was.

- An Avro 504 biplane, also with the engine (a rotary) already dismantled. This is likely the first British aeroplane brought down by the Germans after the start of the war. This Avro 504 (serial 390) flown by Lts. V. Wasterfall and C.G.G. Bayly was hit by infantry fire over Belgium on 22 August 1914 (before the start of the battle of the Yser). Note that the unlucky crew and machine had arrived in France on 13 August,only to be brought down a few days later.
