            This wild wolf is a member of Yellowstone's Wapiti Lake pack that took down a bull elk close enough to be observed from the roadside, but far enough that the presence of human observers did not disturb or distract the wolves from their hard-won, very important (given that the temperature had never risen even close to 0° F during the couple of days and nights this unfolded) meals. While the kill took place under cover of darkness the night before, the (exceptionally large) pack of 20 wolves fed heartily, then retreated to digest their enormous meals soon after sunrise. They returned at the end of the day, and I was fortunate to get a good parking spot so at last I could photograph the activity around the kill. When I first got set up, this was the only wolf on the carcass. He/she was exceptionally annoyed by the ravens also enjoying the boon, and as subsequent photos show, expended a lot of precious energy trying to scare them away. The ravens were not in the least deterred.
