Pompei is a city and commune in the Metropolitan City of Naples in Italy, home of the ancient Roman ruins part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is mainly famous for the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii. Pompeii city and its people was buried under 4 to 6 m of volcanic ash and pumice in the big eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The first stable settlements on the site date back to the 8th century BC. In Roman times it was a flourishing city with about 12,000 inhabitants. The Roman city was destroyed by a volcanic eruption 2,000 years ago. The often lifelike poses of many victims in Pompeii - lying together, crawling, on a mother's lap, face to face - help scientists get a new interpretation of how these Romans died in the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD. Until now, it was widely believed that most victims died from volcanic gas and ash. But a recent study says most died directly from tremendous heat. The Thermopolium and house of Vetutius Placidus was excavated in 1912. The house represents a bar area, which served both food and drink to the merchants and craftsmen as the name indicates, stored in large jars placed in the richly decorated masonry counter of the tavern. The news stand on the back wall is of great interest; extremely well-maintained, it consists of a lararium dedicated to the protectors of the household. In the scene the central figure (the Genius of the household) is performing a sacrifice over a small folding altar. On the far left side is Mercury, the god of commerce, while on the far right stands Bacchus, the god of wine. A hoard of nearly 3 kg of coins was found in one of the large clay jars placed in the counter, probably the last collections of the host, thereby attesting the profitable activity of the tavern.

These types of scenes are often accompanied by two large snakes that approach another altar, and they are often framed at the top by illustrations of hanging floral garlands.

Pompei is een stad en gemeente in de metropool Napels in Italië, de thuisbasis van de oude Romeinse ruïnes die op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staan. De stad staat vooral bekend om de ruïnes van de oude stad Pompeï. De stad Pompeii en haar inwoners werden begraven onder 4 tot 6 m vulkanische as en puimsteen tijdens de grote uitbarsting van de Vesuvius De eerste nederzettingen op de site dateren uit de 8e eeuw voor Christus. In de Romeinse tijd was het een bloeiende stad met ongeveer 12.000 inwoners. De Romeinse stad werd 2000 jaar geleden verwoest door een vulkaanuitbarsting. De vaak levensechte poses van veel slachtoffers in Pompeii - liggende tegen elkaar, kruipend, op de schoot van een moeder, met gezicht in handen - helpen wetenschappers om een nieuwe interpretatie te krijgen van hoe deze Romeinen stierven in de uitbarstingen van de vulkaan Vesuvius in het jaar 79 na Christus. Tot nu toe werd algemeen aangenomen dat de meeste slachtoffers dood gingen door vulkanische gas en as. Maar een recent onderzoek zegt dat de meesten direct stierven door enorme hitte. Het Thermopolium en het huis van Vetutius Placidus werd opgegraven in 1912. Het huis vertegenwoordigt een bar, waar de handelaren en ambachtslieden aten en dronken, zoals de naam aangeeft, werd het eten opgeslagen in rijkelijk versierde grote potten van de taverne. De kiosk op de achterwand is van groot belang; zeer goed onderhouden, het bestaat uit een lararium gewijd aan de beschermers van het huishouden. In de scène voert de centrale figuur (het genie van het huishouden) een offer uit boven een klein vouwaltaar. Helemaal links staat Mercurius, de god van de handel, en helemaal rechts staat Bacchus, de god van de wijn. Dit soort scènes worden vaak vergezeld door twee grote slangen die een ander altaar naderen, en ze worden vaak bovenaan ingelijst door illustraties van hangende bloemenslingers. Een schat van bijna 3 kg munten werd gevonden in een van de grote potten van klei die in de toonbank waren geplaatst, waarschijnlijk de laatste verzamelingen van de gastheer, waarmee de winstgevende activiteit van de herberg werd bevestigd.
