Mtskheta, located just 20 kilometers from Tbilisi, is one of the oldest cities in Georgia and is considered the spiritual capital of the country. This charming city is located at the confluence of the Mtkvari Kura and Aragvi rivers and is known for its rich history. The imposing Svetitskhoveli Cathedral stands in the center of the city and was built between 1010 and 1029, is a masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to tradition, the robe that Jesus wore during his crucifixion was buried here, making the cathedral one of the holiest sites in Georgia. According to legend, a Jewish man from Mtskheta, Elioz, brought the robe from Jerusalem after the crucifixion. jn sister Sidonia took it in her hands, died of emotion and could not be separated from the cloth. She was buried with the cloth. Later, the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral was built on that site, which is now one of the holiest places in Georgia. In addition to its spiritual heritage, Mtskheta also has a lively and hospitable atmosphere. Cosy shopping streets meander through the old town, where you will find small boutiques, local crafts, souvenirs and lots of colorful rugs. At the weekend, cheerful market stalls are added, where you can find everything from fresh fruit and herbs to handmade jewelry, local delicacies and the typical Georgian rugs that add extra charm to the streetscape.

The view is impressive: from the square you can see the imposing cathedral wall, with the dome towering over the city behind it. The sun shines wonderfully as she soaks in the atmosphere of the city.

Het plein ligt vlak bij de iconische Svetitskhoveli-kathedraal, en vormt een ontmoetingsplek voor zowel pelgrims, toeristen als locals. Op het plein vind je gezellige terrassen, traditionele activiteiten zoals paardrijden, kleine cafés, VVV en winkels die traditionele Georgische producten verkopen — van handgemaakte sieraden en aardewerk tot kleurrijke tapijten en geurige kruiden. In het weekend bruist het er van de marktkraampjes, straatmuzikanten en families die flaneren in de zon. Het uitzicht is indrukwekkend: vanaf het plein zie je de imposante kathedraalmuur, met daarachter de koepel die boven de stad uittorent. Aan de rand van het plein stroomt de rivier, en op een heldere dag kun je zelfs de Jvari Monastery boven op de heuvel zien liggen. Mtskheta Square is daarmee niet alleen een toeristische trekpleister, maar ook een plek waar eeuwenoude geschiedenis, religie en het alledaagse Georgische leven samenkomen.
