Kayaks beneath the rugged canyon walls of North Macedonia

Matka Canyon is one of those places where nature, silence, and history come together in an almost magical way. It’s only half an hour from Skopje, but the moment the canyon opens before you, it feels as if you’ve stepped into a completely different world. Between the vertical limestone walls, the Treska River shimmers like a green ribbon carved deep through the gorge. Shadows play across the rocks, the temperature drops a few degrees, and the only sound you hear is the gentle lapping of water against the stones. From the canyon you can choose a steep climb up to the Saint Nicholas Šiševski monastery. The trail begins near the dam and rises sharply right from the start. The hike is known for its steep, rocky sections, unpaved zigzag paths through shrubs and pines, and a demanding ascent of about 60 minutes. As you climb, the trees slowly fall away beneath you, and the landscape opens up step by step. At the top, the small monastery stands on a protruding rock, as if it hangs over the edge. From its terrace you look down across the entire canyon: the bright blue kayaks like tiny dots, the red roof of the little house, and the long limestone wall rising above the water like a natural cathedral. It is a view that makes you pause — a perfect combination of rugged nature, deep history, and pure tranquility. Matka Canyon remains one of those places you don’t just visit but truly experience: from the water, along the trails, inside the caves, and all the way up at the monastery where, for a moment, the world seems to stand still.

Matka Canyon reveals its dramatic beauty in steep limestone walls rising high above the deep green river. Far below, the tiny stone house and its row of bright blue kayaks stand out like a hidden base in the wilderness. From this viewpoint you feel the vast scale of the gorge, the silence between the cliffs, and the sense of being suspended above a world carved by water and time. It’s a landscape where rugged nature dominates, and every detail — from the boats to the shadows on the rock — shows how small everything becomes in this immense canyon.

Matka Canyon is één van die plaatsen waar natuur, stilte en geschiedenis op een bijna magische manier samenkomen. Slechts een half uur buiten Skopje, maar zodra de canyon zich opent voelt het alsof je een compleet andere wereld binnenstapt. Tussen de loodrechte kalkstenen wanden glinstert de rivier Treska als een groen lint dat zich diep door de kloof heeft gesneden. De schaduwen spelen langs de rotsen, de temperatuur daalt een paar graden, en het enige dat je hoort is het zachte klotsen van water tegen de stenen. Vanaf de canyon kun je kiezen voor een steile klim omhoog naar het klooster Saint Nicholas Šiševski. Het pad begint dichtbij de dam en stijgt direct scherp omhoog. De wandeling staat bekend om: steile, rotsachtige stukken, onverharde zigzagpaden door struiken en dennen, een inspannende klim van zo'n 60 minuten. Terwijl je klimt verdwijnen de bomen langzaam onder je, en opent het landschap zich stap voor stap. Bovenaan staat het kleine klooster op een uitstekende rots, alsof het over de rand hangt. Vanaf het terras kijk je neer op de hele canyon: de felblauwe kajaks als kleine stipjes, het rode dak van het huisje, en de lange muur van kalksteen die als een natuurlijke kathedraal oprijst boven het water. Het is een uitzicht dat je even stil maakt — een perfecte combinatie van ruige natuur, diepe geschiedenis en pure rust. Matka Canyon blijft zo’n plek die je niet alleen bezoekt, maar echt beleeft: vanaf het water, langs de paden, in de grotten, en helemaal bovenop de berg bij het klooster waar de wereld heel even stil lijkt te staan.
