Langer’s Delicatessen Restaurant, at 704 South Alvarado, was first opened as a small-12 seat deli by Al and Jean Langer in 1947.  Over the years, Langer’s grew in popularity and by 1968 expanded to 135 seats.  One of the reasons for its popularity was their acclaimed pastrami, and in particular, the #19—hot pastrami, cole slaw, a slice of Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on its hot, crispy-crusted double baked Rye bread, which the New Yorker’s Nora Ephron called the finest hot pastrami sandwich in the world.  

Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant was honored by the prestigious James Beard Foundation in 2001 with its Bertolli America’s Classics Award.
