National Zoo - The Gathering - The Alpha Male

            The Gathering, a sculptural group of seven life-size chimps, was designed by sculptor  around 2002.  The groupp includes seven distinct chimpanzee types, arranged as such to invite a viewer into the group—The Observer, a contemplative male; the Alpha-Male, a powerful and dynamic leader; The Youth, young child tentatively testing his new world; The Explorer, a bold adult on the verge of discovery; the Matriarch, an attentive and aging mother; The Ally, a cooperative and willing partner; and The Servant, a loyal follower.

The National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo, a part of the Smithsonian Institution, was founded in 1889.  The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute cares for about 1,800 animals representing 300 species.  The 163-acre urban park that houses the main campus was drawn up by Samuel Langley, third Secretary of the Smithsonian; William William T. Hornaday, noted conservationist and head of the Smithsonian's vertebrate division; and Frederick Law Olmsted, the premier landscape architect of his day, and opened to the public in 1891.
