At times too close - a photo on Flickriver

At times too close

            
This capture is for my friend Michelle. This is one of the main reasons that Green Herons are my favorites and the saga began when I first thought about taking my camera with me when I went canoeing. It doesn’t always happen, but the Greenie for me is the most approachable bird on the bayou. They don’t always stick around, but if they are busy foraging and you can find a place and stay still, the sound of the shutter doesn’t frighten them at all. It’s all about movement. Stay frozen in place and they will at times walk right up to you as this one did in this shot. This was not the end of the encounter, but merely one of the last photos that I was able to take of him. 

He was foraging on some rocks just below the pier where I launch and take out my canoe. The canoe was loaded on the car when he flew up and was busy looking for anything that moved. I was on the walkway to trying to get a shot of him when he jumped up on the pier beside me. About 4 feet away and too close for the camera to focus on him. He walked boldly across the pier and hopped off the other side and disappeared into some Pampas Grass that was planted near the pier. I’ve had three or four encounters like this where they’ve walked up to me and been too close to focus on with the camera. There’s never a dull moment when these little critters are around. 

Most of the time they are year-round residents and a few of them will remain in the area over winter. Hope I can get back out there soon. Photo taken at Bay Area Park on Armand Bayou. A bit of the top cropped off the shot just to make it interesting, but it is full width.
