Protesters cooling off leads to clashes with police: 1970

Antiwar protesters cool off in the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. May 9, 1970 during a demonstration by 100,000 on a week’s notice after President Richard Nixon widened the Vietnam War by invading Cambodia and Ohio National Guardsmen shot and killed four students at Kent State University.

Students at 500 campuses went on strike that month against the war, including students at the University of Maryland, George Washington University and American University in the local area.

Shortly after this photograph was taken, U.S. Park Police moved to clear demonstrators from the reflecting pool resulting in clashes. Several police and demonstrators were injured and a number of arrests were made. See flic.kr/p/242b86K

The growing militancy of the Vietnam War movement along with a resilient Vietnamese resistance forced President Richard Nixon to continue to draw down American troops before reaching a peace agreement in early 1973 that effectively ended the U.S. combat role.

North Vietnamese and Provisional Revolutionary Government troops overran the South Vietnamese regime in 1976 finally ending the war.
