Royal Twitcher

            A male ruby-crowned kinglet lets his feelings be known through the flashing of his namesake head feathers and loud song. Photographing this species is particularly challenging with its diminutive size, near-constant movement, and flicking of its wings even when "still." 

My previous views of this bird had only been through binoculars, where it appeared as a grey silhouette, and I had never seen the ruby crown. This male was busy establishing its breeding territory in a pine-douglas fir forest near the banks of the Taylor River in central Colorado.
