Station Road Reading Closure (3) - a photo on Flickriver

            Station Road is closed for two weeks from 22nd September to enable Thames Water to replace a Victorian water main. 

To provide alternative facilities for buses, the one-way flow in Friar Street East has been reversed and three temporary stops provided. This also includes the section of Blagrave Street in front of the Town Hall, where Scania 836 is seen running the 'wrong' way whilst working a route 21 short journey to the University.

Scania 836 is one of three Scania N230UD/Optare Olympus that were recently displaced from the Loddon Bridge Park-and-Ride contract by brand-new ADL Enviro200s, and were due to be withdrawn and sold. However, due to the late delivery of eight new ADL Enviro400 mmc for route 21, they been given Reading Buses fleetnames and pressed into service still in blue-and-yellow park-and-ride livery, albeit minus the route branding. From Monday 22nd September route 21 requires four extra buses to work term-time extras between Reading Station and Reading University, and the three Scanias are helping out until the new buses start to arrive in the next couple of weeks. The extra journey are numbered 21a to distinguish them from the main through service to Lower Earley.

Reading Town Hall was designed by the Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse, and opened in 1875. Reading has a strong tradition of elaborate brick and terracotta work, having little naturally-occurring stone but plentiful clay soil, and it is fitting that its Town Hall should reflect this. 

Waterhouse's brother Edwin was an accountant, and one of the founders of the well-known City of London accounting firm of Price Waterhouse, now Price Waterhouse Cooper.
