*This name is well-attested on various Lithuanian websites, but it doesn't make sense to me if I translate it ('Lady's Danford Iris'); which is the 'men's' Danford Iris then? 

On Distribution: A medium-height mountain (1000-2000m) species of dry, nutrient-poor, gravely slopes in grasslands near the conifer woodline, where the bulbs have long snow-cover in winter and long, hot, dry summers. It has been found to grow in the following provinces: Adana, Amasya, Erzincan, Erzurum, Gümüşhane, Niğde, Ordu, Sivas, and Bayburt. 

A beautiful, bulbous, canary-yellow-flowering, micro-sized iris endemic to a band running north to south over the mountains in central eastern Turkey. Like a Crocus, it blooms in late winter to early spring, the flowers poking through the snow. It was first described 1882, it was first cultivated in Europe in 1889. I will plant them in pots.

The commercially available clone appears to be triploid & sterile. Fertile diploid varieties are available through specialty mail-order nurseries. (D. Kramb, 17-SEP-04)*

The triploid clone requires either very deep planting or else heavy feeding if the bulbs are to maintain themselves at flowering size. (Peter Taggart uk, 06-JAN-10)**
