The Road to Nowhere - a photo on Flickriver

            Regular viewers may remember that a few weeks ago I posted a seemingly pointless gate in the middle of a Yorkshire pasture (I'll post a link below).  My wife and I were horrified to walk past the same gate only to find that the large rough grass field behind it in which we saw curlew, skylark, lapwing and hares has now been sprayed with herbicide, ploughed and had huge doses of manure spread over it, presumably ahead of planting some form of subsidised crop like pumpkins or turnips.  I assume this was all done ahead of bird-nesting season, but it's a pretty disheartening and cynical exercise in wildlife habitat destruction if you ask me.  Middleham, Yorkshire Dales.
