Daisy Gets Ready to Ring Up Vespa Salvaggio, Writer for The New Yorker

            "...Now we have come to a generation of beautiful golden things where every lost heart can claim what it never had. Who are we to judge how the broken finish the pages of their story? Who are we to say who can or cannot pick up the brush and finish painting those unfinished masterpieces?"***

As Daisy read Vespa Salvaggio's article in The New Yorker, she was stunned that a stranger could describe so clearly many of her own experiences. She felt as if the words were speaking directly to her...They explained, for instance, Jay Gatsby to her--he was trying to "finish the unfinished masterpiece" of their love. That's what he was doing when he told her that she must say that she never loved Tom. If only she had understood then...

Finishing the article, Daisy felt as if  a mirror held up to her and to her friends, ex-friends, and--she hoped--her soon-to-be ex-husband Tom. He must be one of those spoiled, selfish, unthinking boobs Vespa seemed to be discussing in parts of the article.

 "The curse of privelege--is that what Vespa wanted people like me to think about in this article?"

Thoughts of how her missing daughter Pammy might have been afflicted by that curse threatened to come to the forefront of Daisy's mind. Was she right in wanting Pammy to be "a beautiful little fool"?

"No, I can't think sad thoughts about Pammy now. One day, she will come home and we will feel as if she never left."

Vespa Salvaggio...certainly such an ingenious writer would be able to help Daisy recreate her public image and advance her commitment to becoming David's Queen. With Maisie back, Daisy's quest had one less obstacle.

"Vespa must be very intelligent and very sensitive...She is exactly who I need."

As Daisy picked up the phone to ring up Vespa to say that she wanted for them to meet, she smiled.

 "I can really use her," thought Daisy, completely naive concerning what was to come.
