The Manor House - a photo on Flickriver

The Manor House

            The Manor House was built in the 17th century by the Royalist Cavalier General Sir Ralph Hopton. Sir Ralph was Member of Parliament for Bath, Somerset and Wells and was an ardent supporter of Charles II. Sir Ralph eventually fled England to Bruges in order to avoid capture by Oliver Cromwell. He later died in exile in 1652 leaving his son, Robert, to eventually complete the house his father had started. Robert died without an heir so The Manor House was left to his nieces, the Dawes family. It remained in the family until it was sold in 1954. The new owner of The Manor House will only be the 5th in 350 years.
