Among My Souvenirs - Ever Use a Turkish Dictionary? / "there's a redhouse over yonder"

            Turkish is a "difficult" language to learn - it is not related to any European or Middle Eastern language and the grammar is unfamiliar. Some of the vocabulary overlaps Arabic and Farsi however -- this dictionary uses both Roman and Arabic / Farsi / Ottoman Turkish script.  Includes both current and pre-1920s Ottoman Turkish words along with their origin. Already being able to read Arabic greatly simplified learning a basic Turkish vocabulary - only needed to learn the words that were different. Upon arriving in Turkey could read enough to travel on my own. If all else failed, speaking German often worked. As in German, many words are long and do not appear in the dictionary as such -- these consist of a "dictionary word"  followed by one or more suffixes. For example, "miz" indicates "our" and "siz" indicates "without".

Book purchased at the Dictionary Store on the lower level of the French and Spanish Bookstore in Rockefeller Center, New York immediately after visiting the Tourist Office across from the UN. If you asked "Do you have a Turkish / English Dictionary" the answer was "Which one?" - there were at least two shelves full. This was the largest and the only one to include the pre-reform Ottoman version -- not used since the 1920s. The store had a baffling selection of dictionaries with unlikely combinations of languages -- the place to go if you need to translate Guarani to Pushtu.

Driving past a Turkish Prison near Ankara on the 1992 tour, one of the tourists asked the obvious question from the movie "Airplane" - "Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?" The guide was familiar with the movie and "not amused".
