Golden Age of LP Records - Where to Buy LPs in Boston in the 1960s / 1970s.

            The back of the November 1969 Schwann catalog had an ad for the Harvard Cooperative Society (Coop) stores. The Palmer Street Annex, one block from Harvard Square, had the best selection of records in Boston. They would bet big on new artists displaying huge piles of records stacked on the floor, before anyone knew they were going to be stars - Bruce Springsteen and Jimi Hendrix for example. Prices were also very good. Several other record stores near Harvard Square featured bootleg, imported, and out of print records - some not in the Schwann Catalog.

The day after finals ended in my senior year I went to the Harvard Coop with a friend. He was a foreign student on a full scholarship from his home country and noticed that the receipt for records was identical to the receipt for books - he went on a record buying binge and sent the bill to the embassy (they paid it without question). Neither of us actually graduated after 4 years and we both lived very near Harvard Square for the next 2 years. - record buying continued to interfere with my studies.
