New York City First Subway Diamond Jubilee - Queens County - Wide Open Spaces / Trump's Childhood Home

            No part of the First Subway (1904) entered Queens County -- it was mostly open farm land at the time. Queens was not even part of New York City until 1898 when it split from Nassau County (to the east). Two lines from Brooklyn ended at the then City Line - the Fulton Street elevated and the (later) Jamaica elevated. These were later extended into Queens.

To today eastern Queens is the most "under-served" part of the City after Staten Island. Numerous proposals for extensions and new lines have gone unfilled. The only new line since the mid 1950s is the short Archer Avenue line, mostly replacing existing service.

The Flushing Line (pink upper left) mostly elevated, was built starting about 1910 through "cabbage farms" and "wetlands" Development soon followed and it is now packed beyond capacity much of the time.

The Queens Boulevard line (multi color near center) was built in stages starting around 1930, not reaching 179th Street until 1950. 179th also became dangerously overcrowded at rush hour due to commuters from the suburbs - relieved by diverting the E line to a new terminal on the Archer Avenue Line (thin blue line).  President Donald Trump's childhood home was a few blocks north of the 179th Street Station in Jamaica Estates (silver square).

By 1979 the portion of the Jamaica Elevated beyond Queens Boulevard (dashed brown line) was closed -- later replaced by another branch of the Archer Avenue line (thin brown line). The part of the Jamaica line in Brooklyn dates from the 1890s and is probably the oldest structure still in use.

The blue lines at the bottom started as an extension of the BMT Fulton Street elevated to Downtown Brooklyn. Later the City built a subway (IND) under much of the route. In the mid 1950s the subway and elevated were joined by a new one station (Grant Avenue) link to allow connection to the former LIRR line to the Rockaways.

A short segment of the Myrtle Avenue line enters Queens -- it is currently (2018) closed to repair the junction with the Broadway Elevated.

The 100 or so streets of dense housing east of 179th Street have no subway service at all. Busses from Nassau County to the subway terminals is infrequent. Roads are jammed and parking is scarce. When I moved to Nassau County in 1950 (green square with arrow at right edge) it was mostly original forest. By 1960 it was essentially built up.  More recently the next (and last) county to the east (Suffolk) has experienced similar development. The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) provides an entrance into the City. After more than 100 years, construction of a third track on the Main Line is under way.
