Passage to Turkey (1992) - War Zone Tourism - Getting There was Hard Part

            August 7 1992 - after waiting several months, Pasha Tours was finally ready to commit to a tour to Eastern Turkey. Sent the payment by certified mail from the Lawndale, California Post Office (also hosting the PO Box for Ampix -- the leading amputee porn supplier).

On the way the plane collided with some ground equipment at Kennedy Airport scrubbing the flight. Needed to change terminals and wait several hours for a replacement. Next day arrived at Frankfurt Airport in Germany - the flight to Istanbul had been held. Force marched through hidden doors to a "secure area" several levels below. "Alles gehen nach Istanbul, kommen mit mir schnell!!!"

Locked in the "secure area" for several hours until bused to the plane way out on the runway. Arrived in Istanbul in a heavy rain. The cab driver did not know how to get to the hotel, on Azimkar Caddesi in the Laleli (tulip) district - I gave him directions and we got there without trouble. 

After this, 3 weeks in an active combat zone was a relaxing experience.

{the Post Office area was also far more dangerous than the combat zone in Eastern Turkey. There were frequent (often fatal) serious collisions in the parking lot or while turning into it. I saw someone shot dead in the gas station next door. Arrived once at the bank in back of the gas station - it had been robbed, the doors were locked, and FBI were inside. 

Not dangerous - encountered a "recent arrival" from Mexico in the parking lot in back one Christmas Eve. It was obvious that he realized that coming to the USA was a huge mistake - the streets were not paved with gold. He didn't ask but I gave him more money than I had ever given anyone before. "Feliz Navidad" - he genuinely appreciated it. }
