Eckerd Matchbooks

            Old Eckerd matchbooks. They probably date from the 70's or 80's, but not sure exactly when. It was back when you would get free matches when you bought a pack of cigarettes. 

Eckerd, though not originally from Florida, revolutionized the drug store industry here. Founder Jack Eckerd saw that Florida, a land for the retired, was lacking modern pharmacies back in the 50's. In 1952 he purchased 3 pharmacies in the Tampa Bay area using a new format, where his stores also sold groceries, cosmetics, and office supplies along with the staple medicines. His stores were larger and sold items most other drug stores in Florida didn't sell. This format would later be used by most other major drugstore chains all across the country in years to come.

Florida was Eckerd's #1 state in sales for years. Eckerd even relocated their headquarters to Clearwater. All Eckerd stores in Florida closed in 2004 when most were converted into CVS. All other Eckerds bit the dust in 2007.

All that remain's of Florida's great drugstore chain is Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, named in honor of one of the Tampa Bay Area's greatest businessmen.
