I didn't even realize that today was Mardi Gras until I saw these king cakes for sale at Publix yesterday. King cakes are a Mardi Gras tradition, brought over by French immigrants to New Orleans and the surrounding areas. The cake is decorated with sugar colored in the three traditional colors of Mardi Gras - Green, Gold, and Purple. They are a staple of Mardi Gras parties. Inside the cake a plastic baby (representative of Jesus) is hidden (although due to choking hazards, Publix put the baby in a plastic bag in the center of the cake to be placed by whoever purchased the cake), and whoever finds the baby in their piece of the cake becomes king or queen of the party for the night, and is also responsible for buying the king cake for the next party (or responsible for throwing the entire party based on which story you hear).
