One Thrift Store’s Trash is Another Thrift Store’s Treasure

This Publix opened with the rest of the plaza in 1979. This store lasted in this location for 24 years before it relocated to store #240 1/2 mile to the south at the site of the old Vero Mall in 2003 (the odd store number of the new location is a speech for another time). The old Publix sat empty until 2007, when the plaza was given an exterior makeover and the Publix space was split between Goodwill and a Post Office. On November 2, 2017, Goodwill moved to a new building down the road. Only two weeks later, on November 18, 2017, The Salvation Army opened their new Vero Beach thrift store in the recently vacated Goodwill space (talk about a quick turnover!).

On the other side of the plaza from the Kmart, the former Publix space has seen some change recently. The Goodwill store, which relocated late last year, has since been re-tenanted with a Salvation Army Thrift store. According to my research, the Salvation Army moved in here only two weeks after Goodwill moved out, so talk about a quick turnover! You don’t see that fast of a reoccupancy in commercial real estate often. The Salvation Army thrift store relocated here from a repurposed house on the western side of town where they had previously been for many years. I’m sure this former Goodwill space is a huge improvement for the Salvation Army, as I’ve been to other thrift stores in former houses, and they’re quite cramped with weird layouts as well.
