Newborn - a photo on Flickriver

Newborn

            It was a busy day for the dragonflies (Southern Hawker I think) in my garden pond.
I first photographed this one about an hour earlier, but the photo wasn't too good.  At that stage the dragonfly was quite pale, with its wings hanging down by its side, having recently emerged from the larva to which it is still holding on.  By the time I took this photo, the body and wings had hardened, but the dragonfly wasn't yet strong enough to fly away. It wasn't long though before it was gone.  You can just see the hole in the empty larva case (exuvia) just below the head from which the dragonfly emerged.
