Monon Christmas - a photo on Flickriver

Monon Christmas

            Like Rudolph with his red nose, northbound Monon train #6, the "Tippecanoe" is seen leading his train between Roselawn and Thayer, Indiana on December 16th, 1963 with MON 84A-81B and 6 cars.  This view is looking S/E towards Roselawn.  This is located at MP 55.3 on the Sate Line to Indianapolis route.

Monon F3A #84A was built by EMD as CI&L #84A in May of 1947 and later became MON #207.  It was last seen in the dead line at their Lafayette, Indiana yards on March 27th, 1970.

CSX owns this line now and Amtrak Passenger service is still hanging in there with trains #50/51, the "Cardinal", which runs between Chicago & New York via-Chicago-Indianapolis-Cincinnati-Charlottesville-Washington-New York.  Train runs each way 3 times a week.

The Monon was called "The Hoosier Line" as nearly all of it's track was in Indiana.  It former a large X through the state, crossing itself at of course, Monon, Indiana.  The 2 lines ran from Chicago to Indianapolis and from Michigan City, Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky, with a few small branch lines extending off.  

Employee timetable #14 dated Sunday, October 28th, 1962 was in effect at the time of this photo.  Train #6 was due at Shelby (MP 52.6) at 2:55 pm.
