Most of the 57 people who lost their live 37 years ago tomorrow were in the 'safe zone' hoping to see America's Mount Fuji one more time, or perhaps were drawn there to see it go. "Only four of the victims were known to be inside the restricted areas set up by federal and local governments. David Johnston was on duty for the USGS stationed at Coldwater II only 5 miles from the summit. There was the stubborn Harry Truman who refused to leave his lodge at Spirit Lake and was eventually given special permission to stay. And amateur vulcanologists Bob Kaseweter and Beverly Wetherald who had permission to take readings near Spirit Lake at their own risk. The other victims, some as far as 13 miles from the mountain, were in areas considered safe. The thick clouds of ash and raging mudflows caught many people off guard." (quote by Valerie A. Loggers on the job, people camping, folks staying or cleaning out belongings in their cabins, and people like me that just want to be near the mountain. (and all 16 of Harry's cats) The surprise lateral blast created the largest landslide in history and the mountain dumped 540 Million Tons of ash. So take a moment at 8:32 a.m. and remember the couple from B.C. Canada, the loggers from Oregon, the folks from Cali, Blackburn the photog who's camera was too damaged but film from the day prior was found 33 years later, cantankerous Harry who said that he wouldn't live a week if he had to move away from his beloved mountain, so he'd just stay and all the other nature loving souls and families that died in that catastrophic blast.
