Old Salzburg, Austria - a photo on Flickriver

Salzburg is one of my favorite cities I've ever visited. So much to see, and the Austrian people are so warm and welcoming. The city is surprisingly affordable, and they have preserved their old town so well.

Hohensalzburg is a must-see. Just getting there is fun as you have to take a funicular tram (seen on the right of the castle) to get up the steep Festungsberg which forms the base of this gigantic castle. The views are incredible, and I recommend a tour to hear all the interesting tales from history, some of which may or may not be a little embellished!

This was only my second blue hour shot I have ever taken. I enjoy the process very much and it won't be my last.

Hohensalzburg ("High Salzburg Fortress") was constructed for the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg, starting in 1077 and improved on through time. With a length of 250 m (820 ft) and a width of 150 m (490 ft), it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

The only time the fortress actually came under siege was during the German Peasants' War in 1525, when a group of miners, farmers and townspeople tried to oust Prince-Archbishop Matthäus Lang, but failed to take the castle. In the 19th century, it was used as a barracks, storage depot and dungeon before being abandoned as a military outpost in 1861.
