Smoke Over the Canyon - a photo on Flickriver

Mather Point, Grand Canyon National Park

A river-like cloud of lingering smoke from a forest fire the day prior drifted across the Grand Canyon this lovely morning. It was both glorious and at the same time concerning, as Kaibab National Forest, which follows the rim of the Grand Canyon, is fragile and recovers very slowly over time.

Fortunately it turned out to be a controlled burn by the Forest Service on the North Rim, and served the purpose of preventing even worse loss at some point in the future. Only deadwood was consumed under supervision by rangers. It's a proven technique for preventing out-of-control forest fires.

The smoke made my sunset shots from the previous evening a bit hazy, but here in the morning a temperature inversion created a distinct river of smoke, and it was so beautiful to see. A trip to the Grand Canyon can be a hit or miss opportunity, depending on the weather and even more critically the time of day. This day was the best of all my visits to this most spectacular of all canyons in America.
