The parish Hetzendorf (also: Rosary church) is a Roman Catholic parish in the part of district of Hetzendorf in the 12th district of Vienna, Meidling, at Marschall square 6. It is Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, consecrated.
History
The municipality Hetzendorf originally belonged to the parish Atzgersdorf. 1783 Hetzendorf received ecclesiastical independence; the chapel in palace Hetzendorf served as a parish church. After the population during the 19th century had increased dramatically, it was decided to build a new church, whose costs were borne by the General Church Building Association and the Hetzendorfer Church Building Association. This one was built according to the plans of working in office community architects Hubert Gangl and Eugen Felgel in the years 1908/1909. The interior decoration stemmed from the wood sculptor Franz Zelezny. In 1909, the Archdiocese of Vienna transferred the parish rights from the Hetzendorfer castle church here; the consecration was performed by bishop Godfried Marschall. (Since 1911 the church square is named after him, before it was called Rosary place.)
During the Second World War, the people sought shelter in the church from bomb attacks. On October 17, 1944, the church but was hit hard and heavily damaged, 16 protection seekers died. In 1949 followed the partial reconstruction.
Since the original interior decoration, which consisted of rich historicist decor and in the vaults of representations of roses was destroyed, after the war ensued a fierce debate over how the church should be restored. Finally emerged two main options: a - desired by the majority of the church congregation - restoration in the traditional sense or a "purificating reinterpretation" as it, with the support of monsignor Otto Mauer, by minister Joseph Ernst Mayer was demanded.
Mayer, who as Mauer came from the Association Neuland and was supporter of the liturgical reform, wrote in retrospect: All fake ornamentation was removed and brought the room to large, simple, solemn shapes and lines. Nevertheless, this concept met with fierce resistance, both in the parish as well as at the level of the diocese. In 1954, the Diocesan Art Council was involved in the controversy, and in December 1954 there was a debate with archbishop Cardinal Theodor Innitzer, who died in 1955.
In a long and led fiercly dispute eventually the proponents of purificating redesign could prevail. The in 1956 by Friedrich Achleitner and Johann Georg Gsteu created draft in April 1957 by the successor of Innitzer, archbishop Franz König, was approved and under the leadership of the two architects to 1958 implemented.
In the history of architecture also a draft of Working Group 4 is communicated, that according to Hermann Czech was more radical modern, this effect but would have achieved by non-constructive, seemingly massive space limitations. The Working Group 4, so Czech, then had dodged the issue and the initially to it assigned order ceded to Achleitner and Gsteu.
In 1960 got the Church as an essential decorative element the Triptych The Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary (three free-hanging pictures painted on goat skins) of the Austrian painter Ernst Fuchs, which in 1958/1959 came into being. 1979, these ones by an assailant have been badly damaged, after restoration 1989/1990 by the restorer Donald Corcoran and his wife hung up again in the church.
In 1982, the crypt was adapted for worship. From April to October 2008, the interior of the church was renovated. The technical equipment (light and sound) as well as the organ were completely renewed. Pastor of the church was from September 1979 to August 2010 Hans Bensdorp. Since September 2010, Karol Giedrojc is pastor.
Building Description
The church was built as a powerful, free-standing building in the Romanesque Revival style of a "fortress of God" with secessionist Art Nouveau elements. The church is nearly aligned along the north-south axis, with the main entrance from the south and the apse in the north. At the east side the bell tower closes in almost twofold gable height with visible even from a distance clock tower to the transept.
The exterior of the church with a small tower above the crossing and two with pointed roof crowned polygonal turrets above the southern gable facade looks richly structured. The portal of the main gate is crowned by a gable (wimperg) and a group of statues of the Madonna and child next to the Saints Dominic and Catherine. The church is connected by arcades with the situated to the east vicarage, that has the characteristics of Heimat-style.
The interior of the church has the form of a three-aisled basilica. The space now is reduced to the bare room structure, in the semicircular apse the windows were bricked up. The floor is paved.
The equipment mainly consists of three paintings by Ernst Fuchs, representing the mysteries of the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Rosary. The images that are mounted directly behind the slightly elevated People's altar (a simple table) on metallic supports separate the main room of the church visually from the apse situated behind them. Also located in the church is a large wooden crucifix by Peter Sellemond from 1933, which in previous days hung in Elizabeth church in the 4th district. From the original is still a statue of Mary on the globe by Franz Zelezny left. The pews are modern.
