Hard to imagine that in 1966 this is the A38 Leeds to Exeter trunk road prior to the opening of the Burton on Trent bypass. Some relief for the traffic came with the closure of this part of the former North Staffs line from NS Jnc. to Stretton Jnc. on April 2nd 1966. Drivers had to wait another year before the by pass opened in June 1967.

Colwick shed’s 8F 48552 heads a heavy train away from North Stafford Jnc. on the Burton Derby main line past the neat signal box at Horninglow. The engine driver seems happy in his work, less so is the driver of the rather posh car who appears to sum up the frustration typical of the period; or is he perhaps admiring lesser mortals in their new Cortinas ?

The station building at Horninglow which closed to passenger traffic in 1949 became a transport ‘Caf’ and lasted until demolished in March 1989.

The houses in the picture, including the one on the extreme right, still exists and a hump in the road indicates where the crossing once frustrated drivers.
