Meanwhile is a new play written by Colin Connor, with an original score composed by Mark Simpson. The play follows the lives and friendships of a junior girls’ football team, ‘The Dalebrook Torpedoes’, as they grow up on a small estate in the heart of a country in crisis; Belfast 1981.

Set against the backdrop of the 1981 Irish hunger strike, Meanwhile uses humour, music and original testimonies from those involved in the strikes, to convey a story that stands as testament to the perseverance of human spirit amidst times of great political conflict and unrest. Above all, the play is a celebration of childhood and the innocence that is too easily lost to the corruptions of society and the dividing nature of its politics and beliefs.

Meanwhile, in this hostile environment where fighting on the streets and an intimidating military presence is commonplace, and during a political climate where young prisoners are starving themselves to death in protest, all that the girls in ‘The Dalebrook Torpedoes’ can think about is winning their next game…
