            From 'The Weather Channel' - "One thing that people do agree on is that the phrase originates in Texas and the Central Plains states, so I asked my father, Robert DeWeese, who grew up in Central Texas, what he understood the term to mean. "Even in early November, it was still pretty warm in central Texas. I was always more than ready for cooler weather, everyone was," he said. "Football was the big thing, of course, and the games weren't the same in warm weather. Finally, one day, the air would get really still, and then the birds would stop . . . you'd look up and this huge blue cloud bank would be churning down from the north. 'Nothing between us and the North Pole but barbed wire fences,' people always said. The wind would hit all at once, no rain yet, and the temperature would drop very suddenly -- from 75 to 35 in a few hours. You'd go digging for your winter coat, real fast."

My father's recollection isn't hyperbole. According to weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman, "Blue Northers feature a sharp downward crash in temperature – often 40 degrees or more in minutes – accompanied by strong, chilly north winds. In these cases, one could go from wearing t-shirts and shorts outside to needing a winter jacket."
