London Transport / Brill Tramway - Aveling & porter locomotive and passenger train on the Brill Branch (Aveling & Porter 807 / 1872)

            This postcard mentions London Transport, the organisation that ran the surface and tube commuter railways around London. The connection is that the Metropolitan Railway bought the Brill Tramway and their line from London to Quainton Road was jointly owned by them and the Great Central Railway. Metropolitan Railway trains operated to Quainton Road, where passengers could change to the Brill Tramway 

Being so far out of London, the Brill Tramway was closed. Then the Metropolitan Railway services only went as far as Aylesbury (including a Pullman Car in the train). The services were then cut back even further, now terminating at Rickmansworth, the line from London to there having been electrified 

The other part of the story is that the Metropolitan Railway  became part of the London Passenger Transport Board in the 1930s. This later became London Transport. The little traction engine loco was put into the London Transport Museum at Covent Garden in London, until the decision was taken that it was not representative of London, and it was moved to Quainton Road

There are four vehicles behind the loco in the photo. The first is a well-engineered passenger brake van. The next two are cattle wagons. It was normal back then to disinfect cattle wagons after each use using a lime wash. That explains the white areas low down on the wagons. The fourth vehicle is the line’s passenger carriage, a replica of which is under construction at Quainton Road
