DSC_9668 Female Rufous Hummingbird - a photo on Flickriver

            I enjoyed an afternoon at the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge last week, seeing more than two dozen various bird species.  While focusing on another bird, I saw movement in the corner of my eye and noticed that this Rufous Hummingbird had lit on a branch a bit to my left.  Turning quickly, I was able to capture a few images before it zipped away.  My guess is this is a female or an immature male.

The Rufous Hummingbird adult male has a white breast, rufous face, flanks and tail and an iridescent orange-red throat patch or gorget. Some males have some green on back and/or crown. The female has green, white, some iridescent orange feathers in the center of the throat, and a dark tail with white tips and rufous base.

The female is slightly larger than the male. This is a typical-sized hummingbird, being a very small bird. It weighs 2–5 g (0.071–0.176 oz), measures 7–9 cm (2.8–3.5 in) long and spans 11 cm (4.3 in) across the wings.

They feed on nectar from flowers using a long extendable tongue or catch insects on the wing. These birds require frequent feeding while active during the day and become torpid at night to conserve energy. Because of their small size, they are vulnerable to insect-eating birds and animals.

Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a U.S. National Wildlife Refuge on the Oregon state coast. It is one of six National Wildlife Refuges comprising the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex and supports one tenth of the world's dusky Canada goose population. The refuge contains at least seven types of habitat, including tidal marsh, tidal mudflats, grassland, woodland, pasture, forested lagg and freshwater bogs.

From November through April, the refuge’s short grass pastures provide winter habitats for the dusky Canada goose and the Aleutian cackling goose. Notable winged residents include a variety of migrating shorebirds, raptors, peregrine falcons and bald eagles.

The refuge was established in 1991, and is on Nestucca Bay at the confluence of the Nestucca and Little Nestucca rivers.
