            The Grote Kerk of Dordrecht (Officially, the Church of Our Lady)
Built between 1284 and 1470.  It became a Protestant church in 1572 and is an active church owned by the Protestant Church in the Netherlands.
Dordrecht played a pivotal role in Protestant history when it hosted international synods, meetings of clergy of the Dutch Reformed Church, to hammer out doctrinal matters and to address theological controversies that had arisen.  Such was the case when in 1618-1619, when what became known as the Synod of Dort (a contemporary name of Dordrecht) was convened with the intention of settling a divisive controversy propagated by Jacob Arminius.  His adherents, known as Arminians, were accused of spreading a false doctrine in opposition to several critical doctrinal points held by the Calvinists. The Synod was to debate and resolve the dispute and concluded with a rejection of the Arminian views.  It established five doctrinal points of clarity, that when translated to English, were conveniently reduced to an acronym, TULIP
