            FRIESLAND (FRYSLAN)
Friesland is a northern province in the Netherlands, largely agricultural, encompassing an area of 2,200 square miles (for comparison, Yakima County is 4,300 square miles). It has 11 principal cities, the largest, Leeuwarden, the capital, was voted European Capital of Culture for the year 2018. In 2018, the 11fountains international fountains project was conceived and curated by Anna Tilroe. It included the installation of a unique fountain in each of Fryslan’s 11 major cities by 11 artists from 11 different countries.  (Sadly, they didn’t include a Frisian artist).  It was not my intention to find them all, but in my travel through Fryslan I did find and photograph three of the 11.

“Love”

“Love’ consists of two 7 meter high, white sculptures of a boy and a girl. They seem to be looking at each other, but their eyes are closed. The children’s facial expression is serene. Around them is a 2 meter high fog cloud in which we can wander around. ‘They are dreaming’, says Plensa. ‘For children, the future is a dream full of promises.’ The Spanish artist got his inspiration for the mist fountain when he saw the early morning mist above the Frisian fields. ‘In Friesland’, he said, ‘the water comes out of the ground.” (Visit Friesland)
