Rinsey in the pink

            Sometimes you go out on a hunch.  The weather is grey and limpid with hints of drizzle, but you sense that something might happen later.

I had no such hunch.  The world outside my living room window looked uninviting and venturing out into it with my limited imagination seemed pointless.  But it had been a long tough first week back at work after the festive break and I'd decided I was going whatever the weather.  I needed oxygen in my lungs to banish the winter cobwebs and clear a befuddled brain.  So I plumped for Rinsey, figuring that if anything interesting did happen then at least I was in the right place from an Ephemeris related point of view.

This was the first time I'd ever made it down to the beach itself.  It's not the easiest location - don't take your Great Aunt Nellie unless she's particularly sprightly - and besides the handful of seagulls the only evidence of life on the pristine sand yesterday were the pawprints of a dog whose owners had obviously not made it quite so far.

And as I pottered quietly and joyfully from one vantage point to the next, the sky began to clear and colour.  Two of the most delightful hours found me still gazing at the scene long after sunset as a hint of orange morphed into pale lilac, and then a fierce salmon pink before doing this.  

I love the fact that somebody built a house on the harsh cliff edge here where the gales howl off the Atlantic from autumn until spring each year.  Beyond are the yellow lights of Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole, with Tater Du Lighthouse just visible in the distance.  From there it's just a handful of miles to Land's End.

Whether or not you get a hunch, sometimes you're just glad you needed to get out.
