Glorified Selfie at Botallack - a photo on Flickriver

            Sometimes you get these daft ideas and have to carry them through.  In the closing days of 2018 we took a long overdue return to what's left of Botallack Mine in the far west of Cornwall.  I'd photographed this arch four years earlier and had come up with the idea of making a self portrait at sunset.  As it happened, I was distracted by another view at sunset, and ended up here as the dusk was falling around us, only to find it occupied by a group of children who didn't seem in a hurry to go anywhere.  

While I waited with ever diminishing levels of patience I set up the camera on the tripod and changed to the ultra wide angle lens.  Fortunately parents soon arrived and dragged their offspring off towards their family saloons as I re-familiarised myself with the subject.  I'd quite forgotten that the east side of the ruin was on ground 8 feet higher than the sea facing western aspect, meaning that the 10 seconds I had to run and leap into my window sill position couldn't be too gung-ho if I didn't want to land in a groaning sorry heap on the opposite side. 

It took several attempts at racing across the fifteen yards and vaulting into position before I got a sky that I liked and a body shape that looked sufficiently reflective.  Anyone watching must have wondered what on earth I was doing.
