Michelangelo’s Doni Madonna - a photo on Flickriver

            The work, inscribed in a perfectly shaped circle, depicts the old world and the new: the latter begins with the birth of Christ, while the former is symbolized by the nudes in the background, who pose in the manner of ancient marbles and embody pagan humanity. The use of the double perspective is also symbolic, the perspective of the pagan world being lower than that of the religious world.
