Male Hooded Oriole (Icterus cucullatus) - Bracketville, TX

            This is one of the prettiest birds I have ever seen. All the orioles are pretty but the male Hooded is particularly striking. Of course he had to perch with a stick right through his belly... ain't that always the way ;-). He stuck his face in some flowering Cactus hence the pollen on his face. A Scott's Oriole who I saw did the same thing but he didn't stick his face in the right place and was covered in painful cactus thorns.... that's the time you really wish you had a mist net.
