The Dredger with the Grizzlies - Nome, AK

            While I was taking photos of this old gold mining dredger I was apparently being watched by 4 Grizzly Bears in the willows behind me. A man ran out of his nearby property and shouted "Do you have a gun?" When I shouted no I am just taking pictures (I thought I was trespassing..) He then ran over with his revolver. He did this because 4 Grizzlies were literally right there. Glad I am still here and they were full of Moose Calves and Salmon. Bear Spray doesn't work if you are facing the wrong way..... In all seriousness though this proves that bears do not normally want to harm us but that we can coexist, we just need to respect their space and be aware of our surroundings. After this incident I made sure to use common sense and didn't stand with my back to any willows by a river. Many bears were out and hungry at this time of year because hunting season had just ended. While I was there I watched 2 large Moose disappear into the dense willows. These are not tall shrubs so you can be fooled but they can easily contain a hidden bear or moose and both are dangerous at this time of year with their cubs and calves.
